Institutional Governance
Regulatory framework for the deposit, preservation, and access of doctoral research.
Examination & Defense
All dissertations hosted in the Bugema University Dissertation Registry have undergone a formal evaluation process as mandated by the School of Postgraduate Studies.
1.1 Viva Voce (Oral Defense)
Candidates are required to defend their research findings before an officially constituted board of examiners. Only dissertations with a status of "Passed" or "Passed with Corrections" are eligible for archival in this registry.
1.2 Correction Verification
Records marked as "Passed with Corrections" are not made public until the Internal Examiner and the Dean of Postgraduate Studies have certified that all required modifications have been implemented.
Ethics & Originality
Zero Plagiarism Policy
Bugema University utilizes advanced similarity detection software. Any record found to contain plagiarized content will be summarily removed from the archive, and degree revocation procedures may be initiated.
2.1 Research Ethics Clearance
Every dissertation must include a reference to an Institutional Review Board (IRB) or Research Ethics Committee clearance. Research involving human or animal subjects that lacks formal ethical oversight is strictly prohibited from deposit.
2.2 Statement of Originality
Archived records must feature an explicit Statement of Original Contribution, detailing the candidate's unique addition to the scholarly field.
Access & Embargo Rules
Our goal is to promote Open Access to scholarly research while respecting commercial and sensitivity constraints.
3.1 Default Open Access
Unless otherwise requested and approved, all dissertations are published under an Open Access model, making the full-text PDF available to the global research community.
3.2 Mandatory Embargoes
Candidates may request an embargo period (typically 12 or 24 months) for the following reasons:
- Pending patent application.
- Planned publication of a commercial monograph.
- Security or privacy concerns regarding sensitive data.
Copyright & Licensing
4.1 Intellectual Property
Copyright of the dissertation typically remains with the author (the candidate), while Bugema University retains a non-exclusive, perpetual license to archive and distribute the work for academic purposes.
4.2 Creative Commons
Authors are encouraged to select a Creative Commons license (e.g., CC BY-NC-ND) to clarify the rights of readers and downstream researchers.
